DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF FEEDING DISORDERS IN INFANTS, TODDLERS, AND YOUNG CHILDREN

BOOK REVIEW -
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF FEEDING DISORDERS IN INFANTS, TODDLERS, AND YOUNG CHILDREN by Irene Chatoor, MD, Washington, DC: Zero to Three Press, 2009.
Hardcover. 141 pp., illus. ISBN 978-1-934019-33-7, $34.95.

The objective of this book is to help distinguish and classify the most common types
of feeding problems in infants and toddlers associated with behavioral symptoms. It
does not include feeding disorders associated with neurological, anatomical, or motor
impairments. Chatoor’s intended purpose is to take this broad category of “feeding
disorder of infancy and early childhood,” as identified in the Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, and to tease out the distinctive characteristics
and feeding pattern problems and behaviors into a more clearly defined classification
system. Dr. Chatoor clearly supports the need for this, given that 80% of children
with developmental handicaps may have feeding problems, as well as another 25% of
otherwise normally developing infants....

This book is one of the most concise, yet richly informative books covering this
topic. The case examples help clearly identify the complexities of feeding disorders
and the impact of these feeding problems on the families. Recent research papers are
included. The information regarding diagnosis is outstanding. Dr.Chatoor acknowledges
that multidisciplinary teams are needed to evaluate the complexities of these feeding
disorders, but sadly does not emphasize enough the need for ongoing multidisciplinary
team-based interventions.
Therapists, feeding teams, and service providers working with young children will
find this textbook affordable and containing a wealth of knowledge regarding differential
diagnosis of feeding problems with behavioral components. Therapists should
familiarize themselves with these updated classifications and educate local physicians
about the services they can provide for these children.
